Ellen Gilchrist was a Southern writer with a keen eye for her region’s foibles and eccentricities. Gilchrist’s mentor was Eudora Welty, and like her she taught English and Creative Writing. Gilchrist graduated from the University of Arkansas with an M.F.A. and taught in Fayetteville for twenty-five years.
Before her passing, Gilchrist shared the following advice: “The human race. You have to love it and wish it well and not preach or think you have any reason to think you are better than anyone else. Amen. Goodbye. Peace.”
Just think how much better the world would be if we all acted accordingly.
