Valerie and I enjoyed a vacation in FL, it had been a number of years since we were there last and the one thing that stood out most to us was how much things had changed! Everywhere we looked familiar places had been torn down to build bigger, better resorts each one being more elaborate and extravagant than the next! The question that Valerie and I kept asking each other was, “how much is enough?”
You know, it got me to thinking about what the bible says on the subject of contentment. John D. Rockefeller, was one of the richest men in American. When he was asked, "How much money is enough money?" He smiled and answered simply, "Just a little bit more." It's true, isn't it? Whatever we're looking for in life to bring us happiness there never quite seems to be enough of it to really satisfy.
Thousands of years ago, King Solomon, the richest and wisest man of his time, said this in the book of Ecclesiastes, "There is nothing new under the sun ... I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind." It doesn’t matter what you’re chasing after in life, we will never find satisfaction or contentment externally until we are content internally. We're made for something that will last forever, and nothing that doesn't last forever will ever fill the hole in our hearts!
Maybe you are lonely for God right now! You’ve tried finding happiness in things and discovered it’s like chasing the wind. If you haven't made Christ the center of your life, or if you've marginalized, minimized or pushed Him to the edge of your life; the good news is that God longs to give you the peace and contentment that you’re seeking. By obedience to the gospel today, you can find the peace and contentment that your soul longs for. He’s waiting for you to accept Him today!
