I remember the time I stopped by Valerie’s office to surprise her for lunch. In my haste to visit with my lovely little wife I must have left the lights on because when I got back to my car, I discovered that it would not start! I got that dreaded sound when I turned the key; “click, click" and not the usual sound of a running engine that I was hoping for! Well, I am not mechanically inclined, but I remember my Dad taught me that if a car won't run, it's because of one of three things. It either isn't getting fuel, a spark, or air. You just need to figure out which of those three things it is to get it running right again!
You know it got me to thinking about the fact that people aren’t too much different from cars. When we aren't running right, it's usually because of one of three things. We either lack knowledge, skill or desire. It’s important for us to know which of the three is missing that keeps us from running right. Paul wrote to the Church at Corinth saying, "Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain." (1 COR. 9:24)
Now, sometimes we don’t do what we should because we honestly don’t know we should do it! This is a knowledge issue. We may know how to do it and we may want to do it, but sometimes we just don’t know we are supposed to do it. This happens a lot at church. We know we should share our faith or greet visitors; we know how to do it, but we figure somebody else is the one that’s supposed to do it!
Sometimes people know they need to do something, and they want to do it, but they don’t know how to do it. This is a skill issue and this is the usually the easiest problem to correct. When a person has a heart to serve, (run well), all that’s really needed is to get our hands skilled to catch up with our hearts. We can all acquire new skills; usually all that’s required is to put forth a little effort!
Then sometimes we know to do something, and we actually know how to do it, but the truth is we just don’t want to do it. This is a desire issue! This is a tough one, but changing hearts is God’s specialty. As Christian’s we must be our own spiritual mechanic. If we aren’t running right, we need to first make a correct diagnosis of which of the three things is missing within us and then ask God to help us make the necessary corrections! We’ve got so many wonderful opportunities to serve at Pinnacle; all we need to do is to get our motors running right. Are you ready… Let’s go!
